Martin is a PhD student under supervision of Prof. Justin Marshall and Dr. Karen Cheney. Martin’s research focus is on the evolutionary development of visual system diversity in coral reef fishes.

Visual system diversity among fishes inhabiting coral reef ecosystems exceeds that observed in most other groups and ecosystems. While this in itself may not surprise many, seeing as coral reefs are one of the most species rich ecosystems on earth, and boast a broad palette of colours, we still know very little about why the visual system designs found among reef inhabitants are so diverse. In my research I am therefore guided by questions such as: What drives evolutionary sensory diversification, and how does sensory diversification affect speciation?
